I am interested in the semiology of the modern world. By paying attention to the detail of surface and texture of paint, I can simplify and extract signs, symbols and structures from the urban landscape, creating paintings that take on their own identity and language.
I work in an improvisational way where uncertainty is central to my practice. The process includes a toing and froing of adding and removing marks and materials - a type of dialogue evolves.
I am interested in the expressive potential of abstract painting and currently I am looking at the relationship between abstraction and images recognisable from 'real life'.
Painter and mixed-media artist
By working intuitively through different processes and responses, the subject of each work comes into focus. Invariably the resulting images are complex and are composed of multiple parts with differing areas of intensity. Each work reveals itself gradually; in determining what stays, where and why, I let the painting talk to me. This way of making allows for discovery and play, leaving traces of change in the work.
